Surname distribution maps are very helpful in identifying a presence for a surname in a particular country. Below there are a list of Country specific distribution maps.
- Czech Republic
- Germany – Digital dictionary of German surnames
- Spain (Institute for National Statistics)
- The Netherlands
The best site on a global scale is Forebears.io, which enables researchers to find a distribution of a surname, or a place, you can then drill down and for a bit more data. It is not an absolute science, but it does show distribution based upon 1881 or 2014, so a wide timescale. If you look at the image above, it shows my two studies, the only year they are both reflected is 2014, which is why I have used it.
On a global scale is best site was World Profiler – this site which was run by a university in the UK. Sadly the site is no longer functioning. I had originally left the link in place in case it does come back, but emails of enquiry to the site are not answered, and I have therefore removed the link.
