Quick Update

That concludes the front of the notebook.  As I have always done, I also use the back of notebooks, working from the rear of the book inwards. In this case the pages reflect plans for archive visits on particular dates.

During the first 10 year of my research Surrey Archives were divided into three venues.

  1. Guildford Muniment Room (affectionately known as GMR) attached to the Museum
  2. Guildford Local Studies Library (GLSL) On the top floor of the Library at Guildford
  3. Records Office at Kingston Upon Thames
Following the building of the Surrey History Centre in Woking all three of the archives are now placed under one roof, which is wonderful. Many of the document reference numbers that I have from those early days are the same, making it easier to retrace research steps if needed.

The Muniment Room held a wonderful index within the confines of some lovely wooden cabinets. The data was noted on index cards and recorded names of families, places, houses, buildings and businesses. This was in addition to the main catalogue and I struck lucky several times!
