The web-Wednesday site for this week is:
Back in the day the GPO comprised of the Post Office and the Telephone company. Of course, later on in the 2oth Century we see the split, as the post office becomes Royal Mail and the Telephone, as British Telecom. We see a later switch as the Post Office and Royal Mail splits into Post Office Counters and Royal Mail – separating the purchasing element with the delivery element. There have been further changes with British Telecom too, but that is a subject for another day! The reason for this detail, as that might affect where you look for information!
GPO Heros is a website honouring those who worked for the organisation and served in the military during both World Wars. You can filter the searches between military conflicts, military service – regiments etc, or workplace – either a town or engineering district. A search for BUTCHER revealed 8 individuals, including at least one from the postal museum catalogue see web-Wednesday 9.
The search option reveals the results and provides a details link. There you can see the information of which branch of the forces they went to, what their original day job was and there is a useful image of the actual Commemorative book where the name is recorded, or you can opt to read through the commemorative books.
