Hello Pru – I’m treasurer of Elstead Football Club and we’re trying to find out more about our history. This picture is actually from the founding year of the club. Do you have any background on Hubert or anyone else in the picture? Many thanks
Hi Aman,
That’s so interesting to hear it was the founding year. I’m afraid I only know Hubert in this photo, and not anyone else. Hubert was born in 1895 and at the time this photo was taken he was 15 and he was working as a domestic gardener. His father ran the Woolpack pub at that time too, so he was living there. Hubert went on to fight in WW1 and joined the Queens Regiment (Royal Surrey) and served in France in the machine gun corps. He later went on to be a builder in Elstead and built two beautiful houses on Hookley lane called Pegtiles and Old Bricks. He lived in the village until he died in the mid-70s
My partner, Rich Hardy, also played for the club when he was a young boy, between 1978 – 81ish and he was then signed as a school-boy for Aldershot FC but didn’t make the grade after a few years!
Thanks for the background on Hubert, Pru, Do you still live in the area? If so, please do pop along to a match with Rich. Is he related to Dom Hardy who played for the team in the 1950s?
We don’t live in the area but I’ll pass that on to Rich in case we are visiting 🙂 I’m not sure about Dom Hardy – not someone we’re aware of 🙂
